The Sea Warriors came all the way back at three and six to even the match at 4-4 before Krejci showed his mettle and closed out the match with a service break at love. Hawaii Pacific came back strong, winning the second sets at the one, three, and six positions to get back into the match. The Seasiders re-took the lead and extended it to 4-2 behind Peter Madarassy's 7-5, 6-3 win at number two singles and Hong-Tae Kim's 6-2, 6-4 victory in the number four slot. The Seasiders took a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition when Krejci and partner Peter Madarassy broke serve in the final game for a 9-7 win at the top spot, and the Seasiders promptly took a one-set lead in five of the six singles matches. With the team score tied 4-4 and the third set tied at two each, BYU-Hawaii's Jan Krejci justified his number one national ranking by winning the last four games against a gritty Mikael Maatta to secure the win for the Seasiders.īYU-Hawaii appeared to be completely in control of the match early in singles play. Playing in exhausting Central Florida heat and humidity, the Seasiders outlasted the Sea Warriors in a match that lasted over four-and-a-half hours and came down to the number one singles position. The win gave the team back-to-back titles and completed a 30-1 season. The lady Seasiders improve to 37-0 for the season and have won 169 of their last 170 matches, including 66 straight. Each player took the early lead in their respective third sets but Weng was able to close out her win first to secure the title for the Seasiders. Weng won her first set but dropped the second while Sun did just the opposite, losing the first set but coming back to take the second. The Buccaneers rallied, taking wins at the number five and number three spots, leaving it to Judy Weng and Amy Sun at numbers two and four to come up with the final point. Adrienn Hegedus expanded the lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-0 blitzing at the number one singles spot and Gurianna Korinihona followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win at number six singles to give BYU-Hawaii a 4-1 lead. The lady Seasiders won the top two doubles positions by identical 8-5 scores to take a 2-1 lead on the Buccaneers. The top-ranked BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team won their second consecutive NCAA II National Championship, and fourth in the last five years, by defeating Barry in the finals, 5-3 on May 12. ![]() The BYU-Hawaii Seasiders made a triumphant return to Hawaii on May 13, after becoming the first NCAA II school, and only the second in all of college sports, to register back-to-back National Championship titles in both men's and women's tennis in the same years.
